What is healthy?

In a world of soaring medical costs and quick fixes, what does it really mean to be healthy?

United Healthcare CEO: shot dead. It was the headline of the year – the man in charge of one of the biggest health insurance companies in the USA, allegedly killed by a client who was denied help. No matter what side you’re on, it’s clear that neither party is completely innocent, nor fair in their acts. But why do we have to depend on big companies for help? Why do we have to suffer from pain and illnesses, even death, anyway? This clearly wasn’t God’s original design… but what was?

It’s in the very first book of the Bible that we see God’s original plan for humanity take place.

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

Genesis 1:31, NIV

The original intention was that we would live in perfection. This means no pain, no disease and no need for healthcare. However, as we are well aware, this isn’t exactly what happened.

Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever--"

Genesis 3:22, ESV

Banished from the Garden of Eden, by choosing to eat from the tree of good and evil, we no longer had access to the life-giving fruit or the protection of God from pain. It’s in these few verses that we see God’s original plan – and the downfall that was experienced as humanity went against it.

Throughout the rest of the Bible we see the effects of these actions – the struggles of the Israelites and surrounding nations, the suffering of the disciples and even the pain we face now.

But it’s not all just sin and darkness – at every corner God also gives us hope.

We’re never left without a chance! God has given us instructions and directions for health and healing throughout the Bible.

But what are they?
The first, and most prominent instruction is about consulting God first.

'For I will restore you to health And I will heal you of your wounds,' declares the LORD…

Jeremiah 30:17, NASB

Of course, what better way is there to gain or maintain health than by putting it in the hands of God Himself? We see many promises for God’s love, support and even healing in verses such as Philippians 4:6-7, Psalm 147:3 and Psalm 103:3-5.

‘who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,’

Psalm 103:3-4, NIV

This last verse sums it up the best. Not only does God help us physically, but He allows perhaps the more important part of forgiveness. Cleansing on the outside – and cleansing within.

Create in me a clean heart, O God…

Psalm 51:10, AMP

Of course, part of the promise of health is focused on us participating in our own health. God gave us the ability to think, and free will – meaning that we can also help with avoiding these issues by following the advice we’re given in the Bible.

This includes participating in exercise (1 Timothy 4:8), spending time outdoors (Psalm 19:1-3), abstaining from harmful drug use (and alcohol in particular) (Proverbs 20:1), and eating correctly (1 Corinthians 10:31). We’re also encouraged to behave morally (1 Corinthians 5:11), as being healthy minded contributes to our overall health.
Exercise is absolutely essential in overall health – the ability to move as we were designed is key to both proper physical function, increased immune function, and even assisting mental activity¹. Sufficient exercise is perhaps the most well-known health activity – perhaps as physical evidence is always the most obvious indicator of whether someone is healthy.
In the Bible, we are encouraged to care for our bodies, because they belong to God (Corinthians 6:19-20). Further, being physically fit is referenced as an allegory for our spiritual health (1 Corinthians 9:24) – where we should not do anything half-heartedly, including exercise, but to ‘win’. As Paul describes to Timothy, being fit – physically and spiritually – makes us capable.

For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come

1 Timothy 4:8, NIV

What we eat and drink also plays a large role – although perhaps a more divisive one. With endless diets storming the world, it’s sometimes difficult to know what is really right for us. It’s interesting to note that the more we discover about health and what an appropriate diet is, the more science tends to agree with the Bible’s standpoints. For example, recent medical discoveries feature the potential risks of consuming Biblically condemned animals (Leviticus 11:1-47) such as shellfish² and pork³. Further, we now consider the primary consumption of vegetables, fruit and other plants the most important elements of a diet⁴ (Genesis 1:29; Daniel 1:12). We know we should limit our sugar intake⁵ (Proverbs 25:27), and know the importance of drinking water⁶, where Biblically, it’s even likened to the gift of life (Revelation 22:17). These Bible-based understandings of health were put into a more digestible form for us, today by Ellen White, a prophet in the Seventh-Day Adventist church over 160 years ago⁷. Now, we see increasingly that these historical works are becoming obvious in their accuracy as science constantly makes discoveries that only confirm the old writings.

As stated by Rex Russell, M.D: "As we look at modern science and nutrition, we will find that . . . there is an amazing overlap between God's original laws of clean and unclean and solid hygienic principles . . . Scripture and medical research agree that modern lifestyles lived without reference to God's laws and design shorten life and hasten death"

(What the Bible Says About Healthy Living, 1999, pp. 14)⁸

Spending time outdoors is another consistently proven health benefit⁹. Away from the old methods of trapping people in rooms to evade illness, we now understand that fresh air is essential to health. Being outside not only allows us to get those vital minerals and vitamins, such as Vitamin D, but allows us to truly become connected with God’s nature. Being in the space we were meant to be, with the nature God created for us to enjoy, we are able to experience peace and joy as we reflect on the power of our Creator and the beautiful things He created for us (Psalm 96:11-12; Isaiah 55:12).

Abstaining from drug use is clearly also a factor in health – from levels as accessible as caffeine to as high level as party drugs¹⁰. While the Bible doesn’t explicitly discuss most of the recreational drugs we know today, it is clear in its stance that we should only put what is good and healthy into our bodies – after all, they are a temple (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Further, the Bible repeatedly talks about restricting the use of alcohol, the most common drug of the time. In Ephesians 5:18, we see the clear importance in avoiding intoxication, which leads to a loss of mental and physical abilities, health, and relationships with others.

These are typical knowledge today, and the majority of people understand that a healthy diet, lifestyle, and habits make up an overall healthy body. However, moral behaviour isn’t necessarily always included on the ‘pyramid’ of healthy habits. In Proverbs 10:9, among many other verses, we see that the Bible is clear that moral behaviour is an important element of health, and one that should be guarded fiercely. Not only should we be mindful to participate only in wholesome, healthy activities ourselves (Romans 13:13), but we should also surround ourselves with others who do the same (Proverbs 13:20)

Finally, perhaps what the Bible is most clear on is spiritual health.

I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.

Proverbs 8:17, NIV

Our connection with God is what makes everything else work – it’s not exercise, or going outdoors, or even mindful habits alone that make someone well. God is the Creator of all, and the one who gave us the ability to function. No wonder it’s essential to commune with Him. If the Master of the artwork is right here, of course, discussing with Him is the right choice.

So that’s what it means to be healthy according to the Bible now… But what about in the future?
It’s in Revelation that we see what health will look like after Jesus’ long-awaited return.

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.

Revelation 21:4, NKJV

Here, we don’t need to constantly battle against what we do and don’t know to be correct, as we are assured with the promise of a lifestyle similar to that of the beginning – one focused on nature, work that doesn’t wear us out and most importantly, with God Himself close by (Isaiah 65:17-25).

As we can see, one day we no longer will rely on medication, diets or companies to help us stay healthy. In the meantime, I encourage you to follow God’s instruction for maintaining a healthy body and lifestyle, today. He created us after all – so He knows best when it comes to maintaining and fixing His designs. Give it a try – you might be surprised.
